Reputed as the first palace in Tibet, Yumbulakang was built by the first Tibetan King, Nyatri Tsanpo in the 2nd Century BC and since then became the Tibetan Kings' palace. Then it became the summer palace of Princess Wenchen and Songtsen Gampo during the reign of Songtsen Gampo. After he moved the capital to Lhasa, the palace became a Gelugpa monastery.

"Yumbu" means female deer named after the shape of the Jormo Zhaxi Ceri Mountain which looks like a female dear. "lagang" means sacred palace. Therefore, the word "Yumbulagang" means the "sacred palace of mother and son" in Tibetan dialect.

Highlights of Yumbulagang Palace

The watchtower is the highest point of Yumbulagang Palace. Standing on the top, you can enjoy the excellent panoramic view of the valley.

The Buddhist Murals painted on the walls tell the early history of Tibet. Among them, the most famous one is the first one on the left hand, which tells the story of the first Tibetan King - Nyatri Tsanpo.

The Kings' Statues

The ground floor of the monastery is the palace of ancient Tibetan Kings. At present, you can see Nyatri Tsanpo's statue on the left and Songtsan Gampo's on the right. The first floor is an elaborate hall enshrined the statues of Avalokitesvara and Sakyamuni.

How to get there?

Yumblagang is situated by the mainroad from Tsetang to the Yarlung River Valley. If you hire a private car there, have a stop by the road. If you intend to get there from Tsetang and back, the best method is to hire a pedicab in Tsetang, and on the way back to Tsetang, you could drop at Trandruk Monastery, which is famous for the pearl Thangka.
