Situated at the bank of the Kyichu River atout 1km southwest of Potala Palace, Norbulingka means "Treasure Park" and is the largest and grandest garden in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, covering about 360,000 square meters with 374 rooms inside.

Norbulingka reflects the ethnical, religious features of the Tibetan people and embodies the architecture style of mainland China. It was listed by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 2001.

The area on which Norbulingka stands today used to be a wasteland full of weeds, brush, wild animals. Then the 7th Dalai Lama liked and often visited, and spend his time there. As a result, the Qing magistrate started to build a palace in the 1740s and named Norbulingka . Later it was used as the Summer Palace for successive Lamas holding festival celebrations. At present, it has been turned into a park open to the public.

Several Palaces

Norbulingka consists of several palaces, such as Kelsang Potrang, Golden Linka and Takten Migyur Potrang. Kelang Potrang is a three-storey palace with halls for worshipping Buddha, bedrooms, reading rooms and sanctuaries. Takten Migyur Potrang is also called the New Summer Palace, meaning "Eternal Palace" in Tibetan. Each palace is divided into three sections: the palace, the section in front of the palaces and the woods, which is worth to see.
