Hi Jona, actually January is not a bad time but a great time to visit as it is the off season: no crowds, cheaper hotels, and what is more important: it is the dry season in Tibet with the sunny weather. During the day it is around 7 degree and in the night falls down to -9 degree in Lhasa and less in higher regions. Except Shegar and Tingri, the hotels in Tibet all have the heating or hot water. So we don't think January is a bad time to visit, just the reverse.
Besides, if you decide to travel in January, it's better to book your trip now, because at least one month is needed for your travel agency to make the arrangment for you including the permits, train/flight to Lhasa, vehicle, tour guide, accommodations and more.
