Qinghai-Tibet Railway Sceneries
One of the reason visitors choose to travel to Tibet by train is they don't want to miss the spectacular sceneries along the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. When the train arrives at Xining, you need to be ready for the breathtaking and marvelous plateau sceneries that you will never forget.
Xining and Gold Silver Grassland
When you get to Xining from other trains to Tibet, you have already got to the gate of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. You will see the blue sky that you will see only in highlands. This is just the appetizer of the amazing sceneries along the way. As the altitude rise, the vegetation gets less and when you get close to the Qinghai Lake, the land totally becomes highland pasture. There you will see the famous Gold Silver Grassland which you have heard in the song of "Somewhere Far Away".
Qinghai Lake
The Tibet train will go through at the north bank of the Qinghai Lake. It is the largest salt water lake in China. Seeing it from the window of the train, you will feel the lake is larger than the sea. The best season for Qinghai Lake is summer, about July and August.
Tuosu Lake and Keluke lake
Several hours later, the train will get to Delingha, the gold wild grassland in Mongolian. The train will go through between the famous tourists sights, the Tuosu Lake and Keluke lake. The wild flowers and grass, the cows and sheep forage at the bank side, the birds sing and skip on the trees, all of these form a fascinating picture.
Chaerhan Salt Lake
After the train leaves the Delingha, the sceneries become completely the gobi desert. Then the train will take you to one of the most magnificent scenes on the way, the Thousand-Zhang Salt Bridge built on the Chaerhan Salt Lake. The basement of the part railway is cast by kinds of salt crystalline solid which makes it a rare wonder. Under the strong sunshine, the salt lake twinkles like a dazzling pearl.
Kunlun Mountains
The mountains in the Kunlun Mountain region are all high and steep. After travelling from Golmud to the south for 160 kilometers, the train will run through the first pass, Kunlun Mountain Pass. North-west of the pass is Yuxu Peak at 6138m and east of the pass is Yuzhu Peak at 6179m. You can see a beautiful natural picture of rare animals leaping and skipping on the snow and grassland.
Hoh Xil Depopulated Area
North of the Kunlun Mountain Pass, the train arrives at the Yushu Tibetan autonomous prefecture. The climate changes a lot. The air is less dry, but more chill, the sands in the wind are less, but stronger. If you are lucky enough, you will have a chance to glimpse the elegant posture of the Tibet antelope or see groups of Tibetan antelopes running after the train.
Geladandong Snow Mountain
When you get here, you will feel strong Tibetan atmosphere. There are many Tibetan herdsmen in the town in the Geladandong region who are pure Tibetan people. The Changjiang is originate in Geladandong Snow Mountain which enjoy a height of 6,621 meters.
Tanggula Mountain Pass
This is the highest station in the world, and the natural boundary between Qinghai and Tibet. It situated at a height of 5072 meters above the sea level. Passengers may feel strong high altitude sick and may required to remain on the train. You can see the charismatic scenery of the Tanggula Mountain covered with snow all year round, the vast plains, highland lakes, and the Tanggula River and glacier from the sightseeing platform.
Cuona Lake
Cuona Lake means Black Lake in Tibetan. The lake is the nearest lake to Qinghai-Tibet Railway, so you can see the beautiful lake from the train clearly. It reflects the blue sky and the grassland, like a glittering mirror inset at the highland.
Yangpachen Hot Springs
When the train getting close to Lhasa, it will pass by the world famous Yangpachen Hot Springs, the largest high-temperature hot springs. It is spectacular for the hot spring boiling on the cold plateau.

1. What documents are needed before boarding a Tibet train?
Taking train to Tibet, you will need a copy of the Tibet Travel Permit before you board a train to Tibet. -
2. How far ahead of time should I reserve my Tibet train ticket?
Trains to Tibet are few but popular. According to our past experience, you'd better book ticket 3 or 6 months before your date to leave. -
3. How long in advance should I get to the train station to catch my train?
Because you need to fill in a health form before depart and it will take mang time to wait for the line. So you'd better arrive at the train station 2 hours in advance before your departure time. -
4. What seats are available and what's the difference between them?
There are three types of seats on the train: hard seat, hard sleeper, soft sleeper. Hard seat is less expensive for it is just a metal seat and you need to sit at it during your long trip to Lhasa. Hard sleeper is better than hard seat for you can sleep when you are tired. There are 6 berths in a cabin. Soft sleeper is the most comfortable and most expensive for the privacy and the soft beds. -
5. Is boiled water available on the train?
Yes, there is water boiler in each car and the boiled water are free for you to take. But cups are not available, so you need to take one cup to have it. -
6. Is hot water supply on the train for passengers to clean and wash?
Yes, there is hot water for passengers to clean and wash at the sink area. you can use them for free. -
7. Is there electric outlet on the train?
Yes, there are tow electric outlets in each car. You can charge your cell phone, camera or computer. But they may be not enough for all passengers to use, so you'd better save the electric. -
8. How to cope with the high altitude sickness?
Actually, taking a train to Tibet has already released some risk to suffer the high altitude sickness. But is is possible to be sick and breathless. There are two kinds of oxygen system on the train. If you feel sick, you can either use the individual oxygen port or call the attendants to help you. -
9. Are meals served on the train?
Yes, There is a dining car on each Tibet train where you will get meals to eat. For breakfast, you can have pickles, cakes, eggs, bread and milk. For breakfast and dinner, you can have only Chinese or Western style dishes. Each dish will cost about 25 RMB. -
10. How far is the Lhasa Train Station from the city?
It will take only about 20 minutes to get to the downtown Lhasa from Lhasa Train Station.
