The 1300km Friendship Highway between Lhasa and Kathmandu in Nepal is the most popular and classic overland route through Tibet. It allows excellent detours to central Tibet's most spectacular monasteires - Samding Monastery in Gyantse, Tashilhunpo Monastery in Shigatse, Sakya Monastery and Rongphu Monastery, plus the amazing views of the world's highest peak - Mt.Everest.

Regarding the roads: they are all nicely paved. The only exception are the pistes from Shegar/Tingri to the Everest Base Camp. At the moment until probably mid 2015 the direct piste from Shegar to Everest base camp is closed due to construction and everybody has to use the piste from Tingri to get to the base camp. This takes 3-4 hours and is a very bumpy ride.
